Application of Rapid Propagation Technology Through Tissue Culture Techniques in the Production of Superior Seeds of Local Roid Banana Jatigede

Roid local bananas from Jatigede have great potential to be developed, both in terms of seeds and fruit production. As one of the banana varieties that grow in the Jatigede area, Roid bananas have long been known by the local community. However, as time goes by, awareness of the economic value and advantages of bananas began to receive more attention from various circles. This service program will be carried out in 2023, with a focus on developing local community competencies in propagating bananas in vitro by developing superior local bananas. The success of the Roid banana development program is also inseparable from the enthusiasm of local residents. They showed high interest in participating in training and counseling activities related to the development of bananas. This enthusiasm is an important capital in making Jatigede a center for breeding superior banana seeds, especially through the in vitro method.

One of the breakthroughs that supports the development of Roid bananas in Jatigede is the existence of a household-scale laboratory. This laboratory functions as a center for education and biotechnology applications, especially in the development of superior seeds. The public can learn about in vitro plant propagation techniques, which is one of the modern methods in the world of agriculture. With this laboratory, Jatigede residents are not only consumers of technology, but also able to become the main actors in the application of biotechnology in agriculture. This will open up new opportunities for the development of local agricultural products with higher added value.

PMDSU Scholarship Recipients of the Faculty of Agriculture Create Superior and Innovative Young Doctorates

The Master’s to Doctoral Education Program for Outstanding Undergraduate Students (PMDSU) aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesia’s postgraduate educational institutions in organizing doctoral education. Through the main strategy, PMDSU combines various funding sources such as scholarships, research, sandwich programs/PKPI, SAMA-PMDSU, as well as grants for facilities and infrastructure that specifically target selected postgraduate students.

Furthermore, since PMDSU gives greater autonomy to promoters in the design and implementation of this program, it is expected that graduate institutions will produce more academic leaders. In addition, the program aims to develop outstanding undergraduate graduates through gradual training ranging from master’s to doctoral by instructors and research groups with international level research achievements.

At least in 2023 there will be around 4 PMDSU students at the Faculty of Agriculture UNPAD. This program is expected to provide opportunities for young doctors who master agricultural science so that they can become an innovative Indonesia academic or researcher. The research results of PMDSU students are expected to produce internationally recognized publications, patents, innovations that are relevant to the needs of the domestic industry and develop appropriate technology.

Food Security: Management of Planting Various Healthy and Environmentally Friendly Fruits Integrated with Agrotourism (in Pajagan Village)

Agricultural activities in Pajagan Village require organization to optimize all agricultural activities to the processing of production products. This is done to increase the income of farmers and their families. Therefore, in the context of Community Service in Pajagan Village, efforts are focused on developing farmer organizations that have crop management divisions/organizations so that they can increase the value of agricultural products produced, especially fruit crops. The program for the implementation of the closing activities will be carried out in 2023.

The organization of farmer groups has an impact on work efficiency and development in terms of ability specifications. The fruit management division is responsible for plant management and the protection division is responsible for plant health from pest attacks and plant diseases. Cooperation between fields is urgently needed for the development of farmer organizations. The establishment of plant management divisions/organizations is carried out in conjunction with compost making activities, fruit plant management, and dragon fruit plant cultivation practices. This is done so that the distribution of jobdesks and what should be done is not only based on theory but directly with practice.

Research collaboration between the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Medicine, Padjadajaran University and partners to develop anti-cancer active ingredients based on the morel berry plant

The Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Medicine,  Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with several research partners, have initiated an 3 years project that aims to develop an anti-cancer active ingredient based on the morel berry plant (Physalis angulata). This plant has long been known in traditional medicine and is now the focus of scientific research to explore its potential in cancer treatment.

In this project, the Faculty of Agriculture plays a role in the cultivation and agronomic development of the morel berry plant. The research team at this faculty focuses on optimal cultivation techniques to increase the content of active compounds in chips, as well as ensure the availability of sustainable and high-quality raw materials.

On the other hand, the Faculty of Medicine is responsible for identifying and testing active compounds from the extract of the Citrus plant which has the potential to be an anti-cancer agent. This study involves laboratory and preclinical tests to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the compound.

Research partners from the pharmaceutical industry and other research institutions also play a role in accelerating the product development and commercialization process. The technological support and resources they provide are expected to accelerate the transformation of research results into products that are ready to be used in medicine.

This collaboration is an important step in efforts to find more natural and affordable alternative cancer treatments, while increasing the added value of potential local plants. With synergy between various disciplines and strong partner support, this research is expected to be able to make a real contribution to the world of health, especially in the fight against cancer.

Farmer Empowerment in an Effort to Increase Corn Production in Arjasari Village, Bandung Regency

In February, the area mapping process has been carried out, the area mapping covers the general condition of the Arjasari area, around 70% of the land is moorland and 15% is rice paddy land. Most (60.81%) of the livelihoods of the people in Arjasari District are farmers.  The target community group is farmers cultivating the land of SLPP Arjasari which is one of the areas under the authority of UNPAD. Therefore, the farmer empowerment program in the form of training in post-harvest corn processing is an alternative in optimizing post-harvest management. The training includes post-harvest corn handling training to avoid damage to production products, improve production quality, and increase selling value, training on processing corn into processed products can increase the selling value and competitiveness of corn products, and the use of corn processing technology in increasing the value of corn commodities and can be processed into various processed products.

One form of socialization activity is demonstration plots. The creation of this demonstration plot was carried out to socialize the cultivation technique of superior varieties of corn with balanced fertilization. The implementation of the demonstration plot was carried out after entering the rainy season (end of November 2023). The tillage techniques applied in the demonstration plot are minimum and maximum tillage. The next training program will be focused on improving the quality of fostered human resources, as well as a sustainable corn bioindustry intensification program.
